Panel names 33 miners who died in NSCDC custody in Niger
The Federal Government’s Independent Investigative Committee probing the deaths of detainees in the custody othe Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State has identified 33 deceased persons, including children aged 11 and 12. The identities were documented in a deceased master register
The identities were documented in a deceased master register compiled by the committee investigating the deaths at the NSCDC facility in Minna, chaired by a former Deputy Director-General of the Department of State Services, Jonathan Kure.
The register contains the names and ages of the deceased, their arrest dates, detention location, identification details, post-mortem records and recorded causes of death.
The youngest person listed is Uzaifa Aliyu, aged 11. Two 12-year-olds, Abdulsalam Samaila, also known as Ismail, and Mohammad Sani Nasir, are also among the deceased.
According to Section 6.1 of the committee’s report, the identities of the 33 detainees were established through arrest and detention registers and testimonies.
The register records the deaths as occurring between September 16 and 17, 2026, with the NSCDC Niger State Command identified as the detention location for all 33 persons.
The committee’s overall finding attributed the deaths to acute hypoxic respiratory failure, also described as environmental asphyxia, aggravated by heat stress and dehydration in an overcrowded cell.
However, the register makes a distinction between the overall finding and the individual records.
Environmental asphyxia was listed as a provisional cause of death in three cases, while the individual causes of death for the other detainees were generally recorded as undetermined because post-mortem examinations were not conducted.
The three detainees whose records listed environmental asphyxia as a provisional cause of death were Emmanuel Emeka, Kabiru Suleiman and Idris Haruna.
Emeka, 25, was arrested on September 12, while Suleiman, aged between 14 and 16, and Haruna, 30, were arrested on September 16.
Their records indicate that post-mortem examinations were conducted on September 21 and that all three remained listed as being in the morgue.
The remaining 30 detainees were recorded as buried, with their individual causes of death undetermined.
